The Jack Welch Management Mystique - 1

Jack Welch the Master Painter

In a statement that probably either brings affirmation or disagreement immediately, Noel Tichy, a longtime General Electric (GE) observer and University of Michigan management professor said concerning Welch that "The two greatest corporate leaders of this century are Alfred Sloan of General Motors and Jack Welch of GE.  And Welch would be the greater of the two because he set a new, contemporary paradigm for the corporation that is the model for the 21st century."

Another comment about Welch and his business leadership was, "If leadership is an art, then surely Welch has proved himself a master painter. Few have personified corporate leadership more dramatically. Fewer still have so consistently delivered on the results of that leadership. For 17 years, while big companies and their chieftains tumbled like dominoes in an unforgiving global economy, Welch has led GE to one revenue and earnings record after another."

A lot of people like to throw that Neutron Jack thing around because he had to at times toughen up on costs. But when you look in hindsight at it, would you rather be the American auto industry today that is in shambles and thousands being put out of work, or part of a company that makes tough decisions that require difficult sacrifices?

In other words, do you take charge of circumstances when you still have control, or do you want circumstance to act upon you when you are no longer able to guide them?

Jack Welch, by many people, is judged by a few tough choices he had to make, rather than the extraordinary record he had for years in running one of the greatest companies in the world.

It's really irrelevant what someone thinks about Welch, he got results. And in the end, he was able to lead a company in a way that has set a high standard that will be difficult to meet by anyone; now or in the future.
