The Common Sense Management of Sam Walton - 48

There are always Surprises

There is one thing that anyone that's owned or managed a business knows: there will always be surprises. When considering that, we need to not assume that all surprises for a business will be bad.

Like Sam Walton said one of his first lessons with Wal-Mart (WMT) was: "First lesson we learned was that there was much, much more business out there in small-town America that anybody, including me, had ever dreamed of."

Now when you consider that Walton was a pretty good dreamer, think of how much business that was there that he hadn't thought of, and which today's Wal-not%20all%20surprises%20are%20bad.jpgMart has shown to be there.

Not only was walton surprised, but so were his competitors, until he had surrounded them all over the country in little towns that they didn't think were worthwhile competing in - they never recovered.

In reality, I think this is a business area that many of us need to look at much more closely. I think that there is a lot more business left on the table than we could imagine because we don't understand our market like we could.

I know of some consultants that can go into profitable, well-run existing businesses and help them multiply their business by three to four times what they're doing now by just understanding a few things and looking at different avenues to reach their existing clientele.

If we start believing there's more business out there, we will begin to start thinking of ways to tap into it. Something that Walton and Wal-Mart have been doing for years. There are a lot of good surprises out there to go along with the bad ones as well. Look for good ones in this specific area and you'll find a lot more growth and success than you imagined as well.
