Managing by Wearing You Down
It's funny, in the odd sense of the word, how paradoxical the traits of management seem to be when you talk about them in relationship to being great managers and what seems to be contradictory actions.
David Glass, former Wal-Mart (WMT) CEO mentioned concerning Walton one time that, "When Sam feels a certain way, he is relentless. He will just wear you out.... I guess it could be called management by wearing you out."
With Walton being someone that truly cared about people, it could sound like at first that he was a tirant, badgering you until you caved in to his will. But that couldn't be farther from the truth with Walton.
Rather, what it meant was that he kept on with something when he knew it was right, and kept on talking, selling and promoting his point until people saw it. Even in the most flattened organizations and businesses, there are times when you 'know that you know' you're right, and that you must keep at something until you get it implemented.
The important in all of that is the spirit it's done in ... that's the deciding factor in how it's received and accepted.
Walton had that right balance where he could overwhelm you and still leave you with the feeling that you weren't dominated and controlled. Another one of the elements to the man that made him such a success.
