The Common Sense Management of Sam Walton - 29

Walton's 10 Rules of Business Success - Rule 6 - Celebrate your success!

If there is anything that Sam Walton was, it was positive. With all the things written about strategies etc., this was one of those things that probably did more to boost Wal-Mart (WMT) and its people than anything else.

Concerning this Walton said: "Celebrate your success. Find some humour in your failures. Don't take yourself so seriously. Loosen up and everyone around you will loosen up. Have fun and always show enthusiasum. When all else fails, put on a People%20Celebrating.jpgcostume and sing a silly song. Then make everybody else sing with you."

Walton lived what he preached. You see him in all sorts of strange costumes and doing goofy things. It never caused him to diminish in the eyes of his people; they loved him all the more for it.

The one thing I especially like about what he says is in "finding humor your failures." Nothing can encourage a worker or team that has failed at something while giving it their best effort than leaders making them understand that they don't take it too seriously when they gave it all they got. Humor defuses the situation and empowers people to get back into the game right away.

The other encouragement to loosen up and have fun and show enthusiasm, is like healing to people. What better thing to do than celebrate the success of your associates? It's a powerful way to reinforce those things that the company wants their people to excel at. People notice it and will make efforts to receive the same types of celebrations for their efforts and victories as well.
