Widening their warning concerning the salmonella-contaminated peanut butter, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Friday that all Peter Pan peanut butter bought since May 2006 should be gotten rid of.
While there haven't been any confirmed cases connected to the Great Value peanut butter label that ConAgra makes for Wal-Mart (WMT), it is made at the same plant and is still considered a potential risk.
The FDA added in a statement that "Great Value peanut butter made by manufacturers other than ConAgra is not affected."
So far almost 300 people have fallen sick from 39 states and 46 have been hospitalized. according to the the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal pain and vomiting.
In the U.S every year, there are about 40,000 cases of salmonellosis reported and about 600 people die as a result, according to the CDC.
As I mentioned on a recent post, this is the information needed to protect you or find out more about it:
Peter Pan and certain batches of Wal-Mart (WMT) house brand Great Value are the known sources at this time. If the number on the lid is '2111' it should be thrown away, that is what determines the source of the plant the peanut butter was made at.
To get a refund, consumers should send lids and their names and addresses to ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 57078, Irvine, CA 92619-7078. For more information, call (866) 344-6970.
