Berkshire Hathaway is My "canvas"
Sometimes when you take a man like Buffett and look at the various strengths, strategies and insights he has; both in investing, understanding numbers and how to judge people and managers, there can be a way of looking at him that only gives one side of the story.
One example in Buffett's life concerning Berkshire (BRK-A) was when he said, using the words of an artist, that Berkshire Hathway was his "canvas."
In other words, he looked upon himself as an artist that was using all his skills to paint a picture using Berkshire as the means to see it.
What does that say about him? He understood that there were things that simply numbers and objective realities couldn't alone explain or do. There are invisible things within the heart of people,, and thus the heart of a company that only numbers can measure, but can't always explain.
He was saying that there was a romanticism, a love, a vision, a purpose ... something he wanted to say to the world through his company. There was something within him that wanted to be expressed outwardly. Something he saw that only could be expressed through this means for him.
While these things may seem a little mystical an irrelevant, in truth many times it is these unspeakable, unknown factors that truly drive men and women to do something that must be expressed into the world we see. I think this is one of those rare moments that Buffett gave us a glimpse of something creative within him that went beyond numbers and statistics alone. I think it's important to understand this part of him that really hasn't been talked about much at all. It may be more important than we think.
