Warren Buffett and Secrets of Management - 54
Sometimes when you read some of the stuff people put out as being important to management, if it was followed it would make you look like the class clown or the village idiot. Buffett doesn't look for glamour in his business leaders; he understands the folly that can come about from that.
Before we go on I want to make it clear that this doesn't mean that someone isn't funny or wants to have a lot of fun like Richard Branson or Herb Kelleher, but what I mean is that while that's their style, their competitors understand that
underneath they're ferocious competitors.
For example, anyone who's competed with Branson or Kelleher know that they understand their companies and their business explicitly. Underneath all the outward charm and expression are men who knew exactly what it is their company represents and where they are taking it.
There's a huge difference between presenting yourself in a certain way and inwardly being rational and focused. Branson frustrates many of his competitors because they think of him as a buffoon because of the tactics he uses to market his various companies.
So when talking about unglamorous management, it doesn't necessarily mean boring or stuffy, rather it means that underneath it all a manager knows rationally and logically exactly what business they're in and how to keep the business growing successfully.
It's not the outward aspect of managment that refers to the glamour part, but those that would be inwardly this way can fail miserably because of a high opinion of themselves that is different than the way things really are.
Buffett looks for management that understands the difference.
