You Can Learn From Everybody
Sam Walton had a passion for continually learning. It was one of the major reasons that Wal-Mart (WMT) has risen to the heights it has.
One of the true legends that has followed his story around has been that in a very short time he could engage you in conversation and before you know it he's somehow tapped into the knowledge and information you have connected to whatever it is he was interested in. Many have said that this genuine interest and insatiable hunger to improve and learn was a key driver behind all that he was.
A lot of this came from his honest humility and appreciation for his fellow human beings. He truly believed that you could learn from anybody - as he said more than once - and understood that everyone had something to contribute. This is a far cry from the top-down management that imposes from above
In a certain way, Sam Walton and Wal-Mart were built from the knowledge mined out of many people from all over the U.S. and world. Walton simply separated the chaff from the wheat and implemented the best that had been offered.
You could say that Walton and Wal-Mart were an extension of a vast company of people were not connected by geography or knowledge of one another, but who through the one common connection of Sam Walton, inputed what they had which resulted in the company emerging as the premiere retailer in the world.
The first step in all of this is understanding that there's no way that anybody can have it all when it comes to building a great company. He drew from the vast store of resources called human beings and understood the importance that everybody potentially had to offer.
