Sam Walton Stuck with the Courage of His Convictions
Sam Walton more than once said that his vision for Wal-Mart (WMT) never was to be a huge company; it wasn't part of his plan, he just wanted it to be a great company.
A lot of people pursuing leadership and management success look sometime too deep for answers that really aren't complicated to answer.
When you look at some of the people we talk about at managersrealm, you see that in general they weren't what people would consider "brilliant" or geniuses. To
the contrary, most of them had simple ways they looked at things that they refused to be moved off of.
With Walton, it was the courage of his convictions. He knew what he wanted and refused to move off of it until he got it. In hindsight, the majority of things he did seem so obvious today, but back when he was doing it, it wasn't so obvious.
People that sought him out for his secrets were continually amazed at what and how he did things. Looking for some mystical answer, they found rather simple, common sense actions that guided his steps.
The key to his success, like so many others was sticking to his convictions and riding them all the way no matter what conventional wisdom was thrown his way. We can't be tossed back and forth by the endless new thing that is always being peddled as the next "new" thing that will drive us to success.
Having the courage to stick with what we believe in our purpose and where we want to go is an anchor against the endless wave of information and assault upon the core purpose and value we represent.
