Walton's 10 Rules of Business Success - Commit to Your Business
Sam Walton wrote about what he considered the 10 rules for business success that he abided by. We'll talk about these insights in the next posts to find out the gems and common sense that has made Wal-Mart (WMT) so successful.
Rule #1: "Commit to your business. Believe in it more than anybody else. If you love your work, you'll be out there every day trying to do the best you can, and pretty soon everybody around will catch the passion from you - like a fever."
It should go without saying, but it does need to be communicated that this obviously can be transferred to your division, department or store etc.
If you're in a position of leadership and aren't committed, there is absolutely no way to hide it from your people. It will permeate the business and spread all the way through it. Eventually if the trail is followed as to why things are the way they are, it will come to full circle and lead right back to you!
On the other hand the reverse will also happen. Truly believe in the work you do and it will show all over you and it also will spread through a group of people like a wildfire.
I know that this isn't anything new, but then why is it so hard to find it within businesses? Many ideas don't need to be new, they just need to be executed or believed in. That's why so many people can start a business in an existing market and outperform the existing businesses tremendously.
You can't hide a business or the way they treat customers and each other when the people love what they do. Every great business and business leader has this as an essential part of their makeup. The results are always astounding!
