Herb Kelleher: The Method Behind His Madness - 10

Why We Don't Need Control - Devoted People

When it came to working for a business, Kelleher know that it took more than just showing up and doing you time for workers to be effective and take ownership.

Talking about what can release not only our workers, but also layers of management, along with control was to people to believe that they are working for something far beyond a paycheck.

He said it this way: "And the more that people will devote themselves to your cause on a voluntary basis, a willing basis, the fewer hierarchs and control mechanisms you need."

He didn't say the more people that devote themselves to you, or to your business, Devoted%20People.jpgbut he said "your cause." When people see that what they are doing has a tremendous impact upon those they serve, each other and the shareholders, and that it even goes beyond that to make a difference in the world ... as the company was considered a shining star that many companies wanted to learn from, they will be devoted, willing and self-motivated to be excellent.

The key in all of it is that the vision and purpose that they serve so captivates them that they voluntarily enter into this type of attitude which makes what they're doing bigger than themselves. And people want to be involved with something beyond themselves alone.

The result is that leadership can then get out of the way and let the people release their enthusiasm and initiative to bring huge results to the benefit of everyone that the company comes into contact with.

People that are willingly devoted and don't need to be controlled or someone watching over them, rather they need someone serving them and providing everything they need so they can run with the wind. Working for a cause is the piece of the puzzle that originates this great culture that can do almost anything they put their hearts and minds to.
