Warren Buffett and Secrets of Management - 25
A number of people have asked Buffett the secret to his retaining his managers once they've become independently wealthy and have no need to perform well to ensure their job.
Buffett's response goes back to what he looks for in managers in the first place. He said: “they work because they love what they do and relish the thrill of
outstanding performance.”
The incentives his managers have isn't something that the company can give them, it comes from within. Nobody can be trained to love what they do. It has to be part of the makeup of the person in the first place.
The second is similar to the first. You can't give someone the desire to perform in an outstanding manner.
Now having said that, leadership can take away from these desires within someone if they're treated wrong, or there isn't the corporate culture in place to empower people to release those inner desires.
This is why Buffett pretty much stays out of the way of his managers, and makes sure that they are let go to pursue the excellence that is already within them. He understands that this isn't something that can be trained into someone, but sure is something that can be taken away. He doesn't take it away - neither should we.
