Warren Buffett and Secrets of Management - 10
We hear a lot about going into business, and loving what we do as an incentive to keep on going when things get tough. In the area of management, the same holds true.
Management, if you love the business you're in, does offer the sense of ownership. There is very little in the area of motivation a manager needs to do their job well. Buffett and Berkshire (BRK-A) run things this way. One of the criteria for management and leadership in the company is that that leaders absolutely love what the company they work for. This type of thing can't be hidden.
Because Buffett refuses to micromanage a company, it's one of the key elements that he looks for in his leaders.
We don't have to go into all the benefits of that, we pretty much know the fruit of enjoying what you do. In the case of leadership in a company though, I don't come across this too much in my research outside of personal ownership of a business.
Need a leader in your business, look for those that you've watched for a while that flourish in their current job in the company. When you know those that can't wait to come to work, you know you've got some potential for them to succeed as managers.
Another key to building a great company.
