Why Many Annual Business Plans Fail

Understanding the things that should never change, along with the things that will always be in transition, is a key to becoming an effective manager.

In the case of vision and writing an annual business plan, this understanding couldn't be more important to comprehend.

One of the main reasons for failure in implementing a yearly business plan is that it lacks focus and tries to cover far too much.

One of the results of this is that there are all sorts of activity that is going on, but very little progress. One of the temptations managers must overcome is to look at activity as if it's really bringing results, when in reality it's not.

Business Goal Setting.jpgIf there is lack of focus, the result is the inability to measure whether progress is really being made. Too many goals and there will be no way that it can be measured. Activity isn't an accurate measure of whether what needs to be accomplished is being accomplished.

Everything springs forth from accurate focus. If we underestimate what needs to be done, there can be a gap that will be almost impossible to bridge, as our people perform what's required and the results aren't where we want them. On the other hand, if we overestimate what can be done, it brings discouragement and frustration to workers who did their best to make it happen.

We must accurately identify the most important goals for the year and what it will take to accomplish them. To not accurately identify and communicate what is truly needed to be accomplished for the year can result in major disruptions that can demoralize and bring about the opposite effect that was intended.

Effective managers are not easy to find. They need many qualities, among which the one which seems to be most needed is diplomacy.

In the context of creating an annual business plan, diplomacy is fine to gather as much information that is possible, from all sources, including employees.

But once the needed infomation is gathered, a decision must be made that reflects the real situation that exists.

If needed information is gathered, a decision must be made that reflects the real situation that exists.
