The Two Top Ethics Issues for 2006

The continual stories of corporate scandals have had companies reeling for a number of years. Integrity Interactive Corporation recently unveiled the result of their recent study, along with the two top concerns that companies want their people to understand.

As Richard J. Cellini, a vice president at Integrity Interactive Corporation said:

“Today you cannot read the paper or watch the news without seeing a story about a corporate scandal or a major ethical lapse, the trend is actually accelerating, from backdating stock options and falsifying sales reports, to corporate board spying. We live in an era in which corporations are subject to tremendous compliance requirements, and face serious consequences for ethical or legal failings.”

The top two ethics issues for companies were these:

1. Financial Integrity: This is the top concern of all corporations today. One of the reasons is the huge push for quarterly results, by publicly owned companies, that pressure executives to do things to make the numbers look good. With the current backdating of stock options, along with the continuous temptation to use tricks in the Integrity Interactive.giffinancial reports, companies are working hard to tackle this before it's too late.

2. Computer Use: This is one of those extremely hard areas that will be difficult to control. Not because people won't listen, but because there is always that illusion that the things you do online with your computer or on an intranet, are being performed privately. Many people treat it as a personal interaction, when many things that are being done through various modes of communication can be publicly embarrassing, not the proper company use, or in a number of cases even illegal.

These are areas that we need to continue to hammer at and help our people to understand the integrity we need to have in all of our interactions within the company. These are major issues that aren't going to go away soon. They need to be a priority to address in any company in the world
