A technique that works in parenting and sales, also works great in managing in the workplace.
For example, in sales, it has been a very effective tool when talking with someone that's in the middle of making a decision, one way or the other, to simply say something like: Do you want that delivered or will you take it yourself? Essentially you're having them believe that they are making the decision to buy the product when they, up to that time, were wavering.
The same thing with children; rather than go against their built-in resistance, wise parents will give several options for them to choose, and when the choice is made, the child believes they have made it
themselves.
Of course the trick is that they have made it, it's just that you narrowed the choices down to get them to decide and helped to remove the resistance.
In management this is a great tool to use in many situations; from managing conflicts to improving the performance of workers ... it's just a matter of adapting this powerful tool to the situation at hand.
So when there is resistance to things that need to be done, thing of ways that you can use this tool to get your people moving toward the desired goal. It's simple, powerful, and it works.
