He Loves to Give Back
Branson has a special relationship and love for South Africa. When his good friend Nelson Mendela asked him to help him out with a business in South Africa that was failing, and would result in losing thousands of jobs, he immediately responded and went to look it over and see if he could salvage it. He liked it and became the owner of it quickly, helping out his friend.
But he's looking more than just short-term solutions to their problems. He's behind a business school that many in the country love, and are preparing low income students to be leaders of the future. Virgin Unite, the charity arm of the company offered the initial funding to get it going.
He also is working hard with the Aids effort to help treat and prevent it from spreading even further. One project is the partial funding of a clinic for specifically treating the disease. The charity is also helping in the fight against malaria.
One of the things he's uniquely promoting is for businesses to take a much more personal interest in their employees in helping them to learn about the causes and to understand how it just makes good business sense to take care of their employees.
He has a healthy, balanced view in all of this as he understands that he needs quality, profitable companies running so that he will be able to fund the charity work he's starting to find so important to him.
