He's Still Thinking Big
When I talk about Branson and thinking big, it's not necessarily connected to how much money he brings in, because he's said more than once that it's not the key decider in what he does.
Thinking big to Branson, is thinking in terms of the unique; something that inspires and motivates people to want to see happen.
In that vein, I think of his announcement that he is going to get into the business of starting a company for commercial space travel. He said that he believes that there's a huge market for people that want to go into space, and his thought is why shouldn't they be given the opportunity to have that experience.
He has said that he's been looking into it for over 10 years. He began to ask himself the question of how Virgin could become the first company to offer commercial space flight. As a result he started to query everyone connected to field to learn and understand the many aspects of space travel.
When the breakthrough came that would allow it to happen, he and Virgin were the first to respond and begin to make it happen. He believed in it, prepared for it, and was ready when the opportunity arrived.
Thinking big isn't for the most part, again, about huge amounts of money. Most people don't get too excited about that. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have been around too long for it to be that compelling. It's ideas that fire the imagination of people, and get them on your side rooting for you to make it, that's the most important part of thinking big. Branson has this in spades.
