You've Got to Move Fast
One of the things that Branson considers part of his 10 secrets to success, is that he says you must "move like a bullet."
An example that recently happened shows that in this one case he didn't move fast enough. He recently sold Virgin Mobile to NTL and as a result he had about a 10% share of the company. He made it known that he was interested in getting control of ITV so that he could offer some legitimate competition to BSkyB in the British TV market.
While he let it be known, his competitor, Rupert Murdoch, one of the best fast moving businessmen alive, swooped in and bought an almost 20% stake in the company. Branson has ranted against it and is persuing legal means to try to rectify the situation. But the problem is that he let it be known that he was interested and then didn't move in quickly enough to get what he wanted. It's not the usual way that he has operated.
So there's one mistake that Branson made that we can learn from, and in which he deviated from his normal course of action. He's right. Once you know what you want and how to get it, you've got to move with some speed to get it going before someone comes in and steals it right from under your feet.
