More on how Branson Prepares to Start a Business
While not all of Bransons' businesses have went great, by far the larger majority have. For this to be the case, there is something that would have had to have happened before the businesses even started.
I know it sounds like an understatement, but he does an extraordinary amount of research in preperation. When looking to get into an area, he'll talk to as many experts as possible to get a hold on what he's getting into; or if he will get into it.
Throughout the process he develops relationships and friendships, so when the time comes to think of beginning the process, he can tap into his community of friends and colleagues to see if anything has changed or if there are any new things to consider before the start. As a result, many times Virgin and Branson are the first on the scene in that niche market.
The key to it he says is to immerse yourself in whatever interests you and then be sure that nobody gets there before you do.
Another thing this does is to eliminate a lot of surprises that will inevitably come our way. When you have an overall handle on what it is you're getting into, it prepares you to be able to offer solutions that you would be hard pressed to know if you weren't thoroughly versed in the problems your customers will face. It's worked great for Branson and all those who perform due diligence.
It's probably the most important ingredient in giving your business a real chance to make it.
