When you Know Your Brand has made it
Do you want to know what the ultimate compliment to a brand would be? Look at what Richard Branson did earlier this year (2006) and you'll get the idea of what he's done with the brand Virgin.
He sold the Virgin Mobile company he built to NTL, essentially for the purpose of being able to use the name Virgin. The price he got for it? Well over $1 billion.
We hear people repeating the idea that branding doesn't matter anymore. Tell that to Richard Branson and Virgin. The company is the brand. People flock to the numerous Virgin companies because they're part of the Branson fold.
The very name Virgin is now worth so much that it's probably is only limited by what Branson is willing to connect it with. Branding is far from dead. It's just that branding, as Branson has shown us, must be backed up with reality, not just marketing hype that has to spin situations because they aren't real.
For most companies and leaders, it's hard to face the simplicity of this. Be true to who you are and do what you say, the result will be a brand that people trust and will value, while endorsing through doing business with you over and over again.
