Branson's Grasp of Reality and Focus
Branson talked to a group of business students one time concerning their desire to make a difference. He gave them a dose of reality that everyone in business needs to hear. He said that people running businesses need to be concerned with their survival before they going around trying to "save the world."
It makes complete sense. Businesses and those running and owning them, can't do a thing if they don't know how to profitably run their businesses. How can we solve really important problems if we don't know how to handle and solve the problems that businesses face us with?
There are times when people running a business do it for a good reason, but when you really look at it, for the wrong reason.
Name any of the problems that you'd like to help with in the world and then you think about starting a business to help solve or improve the situation. The problem is you're running it like a charity rather than a business that must serve their customers. Quite a number of businesses and individuals fail miserably because they don't understand this reality.
Customers aren't going to care that you give them poor service because you say your focus is on a worthy cause. It won't matter. They want to be served by what you promise them, not be concerned that a percentage of the sales will go somewhere to help.
If anyone really wants to help in something, the best thing to do is serve your customer to the highest level you're able to. At that time the money will come in help in areas without taking the focus off of why it's coming in.
