When you talk about the way a brand should be handled, again, Branson breaks all the rules. It has plastered the Virgin name across hundreds of companies, in a way that observers say should be stretching it way too thin; to the point of meaninglessness - yet his companies still thrive.
The major reason he can do this successfully is because he refuses to accept the limitations that others say he must adhere to. This refusal of limitations is done in a way that enhances and builds the company; not destroys it.
From most outsiders it looks like there's absolutely no reason for the way the Virgin brand is put together, yet there is. The cohesive element that holds the brand together isn't the commonality of the market they serve, but the connection
that is made with the people it serves.
The company has a certain way of life that it represents that makes complete sense to those that love to participate in the Virgin way of doing things. Branson has literally put his way of life into the company and it fills everything that the brand represents.
The niche the Virgin brand serves, isn't what one would think of when you hear the word, rather it's a way of living; a way of thinking; a way of doing that people experience wherever the company offers its products and services. That's the secret that most people looking at the company can't figure out.
The only question that has to be answered is if the no limitation way of life that he lives, has been infused into the company in a way that will make it last past his departure from it. Nothing but time can answer that question.
