Isadore Sharp, chairman and chief executive of the Four Seasons (FS) hotel chain, in somewhat of a combative mode, has said the bid for the company that he helped put together is the only one he'll consider. Sharp commented: "This proposal achieves all my objectives for Four Seasons and my family, and is the only one that I am prepared to pursue."
Sharp pretty much holds the upper hand in this as he controls 65 percent of the super-voting shares. This puts him in a position much
stronger than most CEOs have.
There are already some protests being made concerning him not being willing to consider alternative bids for the company. Other deals similar to this tend to be challenged in court, which usually results in a higher bid being made.
One of the problems in this case is that Sharp will get a lot of personal gain from this. As a result of a long-term incentive package that has been in place since 1989, he would receive $288 million and would also remain CEO of the company.
While I guess it doesn't hurt to try to make this go, I think in the current corporate environment, it's not the best way to do it. Do you have problems with how Sharp is going about this?
