An executive from a big business once was asked if he was concerned in any way about the possibility of losing control of the business. His response was that not only did he never have control, but that he had never wanted it from the beginning.
His thought was that if you created the right business culture in the first place, where your people wanted to participate; there was no need for control.
In this type of culture, people know what must be done, and they do it as if they're working for a non-profit organization. That is one of the little secrets behind truly great companies today. The workers devote themselves to the business because they feel they're working for a cause, more than they are for a company.
The more this is prevalent, the less control and oversight has to be initiated. As we always say on managersrealm, the greatest leaders are always the greatest servers; and this means that the need for control is very minimal.
You know you've got something special when you are never able to quite catch up with what is happening around you. This isn't something to fear, it's something to cultivate; the reason why, is that people have taken ownership of the company, and are initiating actions.
What this essentially does is bring a competitive advantage to the company as workers pre-empt problems that only they can understand from caring and their daily interaction with it. They think of solutions sometimes before you even understand that there was a problem.
Work to bring a culture like this to your company or department and the results will astound you! You'll look like a management genius. As a matter of fact, you would be.
