Two of the biggest concerns among workers in a number of industries are job security and an exciting place to work.
In relationship to job security, I want to talk about why that's important, not only from the psychological affect it has people, but what it also forces management to do.
I know that there is always the temptation to make decisions based upon short-term profits. Many times it means hiring beyond normal capacity and then getting rid of the employees as soon as the work is
done. While this may be necessary in very critical situations, it's not healthy for a company to continue operating like this over a long period of time, or to have it even be part of the business culture.
Now with working hard to provide job security, there is a side of it from the management standpoint that is great for the business. What it does is force leaders and managers to incorporate strong discipline into the company. Layoffs are one of the most disempowering facets of business life for employees. They come to work with one thought on their mind: is it my turn today?
So when you make a commitment to workers to do everything you can to keep their jobs, it makes leadership do things in a certain way to assure that it happens. For example, the discipline of not hiring more people than normally required to do a job; it requires that a company controls its growth rate and expands at a speed that can be incorporated into all areas of the business without loss of jobs or quality of work.
If there are things that are presented that would give some temporary boosts to the company, outsource it, or partner with someone else and be more a broker of the deal, rather than trying to do it with your existing workforce, or hiring temporary people that you know you'll have to let go.
This is a tremendous motivator for people desiring security in an insecure world.
