There is illusion that never seems to die concerning changing other people; it's the illusion that you can someone else besides yourself. Once you understand that it can't happen, the sooner you can do the things that really can make a difference.
This doesn't mean that people don't change, but it means that they do it on their own, not because someone else is pressing them to. Most of us know by now that when we try to push someone to change, they just dig their heals in; whether they recognize the need to change or not.
The secret to great leaders and managers is that they know how they have to change in order to bring about the desired results in others.
This doesn't mean that situations aren't to be challenged or that strengths or weaknesses of employees are just brushed aside. What it means is the manager is the one that needs to change their approach and adapt in order to learn the best way to approach each employee to be able to work with them.
It can be surprising when you change your tact, demeanor, voice, intonation and posture...how the employees will respond to your change.
Make the effort to adapt and change according to the uniqueness of each employee and you'll see them change without you having to try to endlessly and fruitlessly push and prod them.
