A major goal of any manager in any organization should be to remove anything that prohibits the flow of information and knowledge.
Most of us know that many managers are insecure because they feel that the sharing of information is a step toward not being needed. In reality, the opposite is true. The greatest sharers are those that are needed the most; not those that have knowledge that simply sits within them. That adds no value to the company, worker or customer.
We must create a culture of sharing.
Here are 5 things that can be done to encourage it:
1. The first step that must be taken is to make it one of the top priorities of the business. If it isn't, a lot of what individuals have to make the company a better place won't even be brought out into the open. It must begin with management believing wholly in this.
2. Offer a number of different ways to put into practice various communication options. With technology today you could have everything from email, blogs, wikis, and virtual places to meet; among a host of options available.
3. People do what is rewarded. Make sure you are always on the lookout for those that are knowledge sharers. When you find them and they are making an impact, be sure they are rewarded in ways where others realize that you're serious about this being part of your business culture.
4. If you're having trouble getting people to share things, create topics of strong interest that will be sure to get people talking.
5. Last, support any type of efforts where workers are getting together in any way to cross-pollinate the work place.
Having these as part of your strategy will ensure that your business will never grow stale from lack of fresh, innovative and new ideas.
