As we've talked about a number of times here, one of the major problems that we encounter in the business world is when we are extremely successful. It is in that time of success that we are tempted to spend more than we need to, to get great results.
Still it's amazing to see so many that run businesses or departments figure out a budget and then, whether they need to or not, spend the entire sum provided for.
Businesses need to be run more like a financially successful individual. Those that are truly successful, have the discipline to live well below their means and than successfully invest the rest. This is hard for a number of businesses to achieve - most don't!
The problem with those that see this is that they don't always understand what to spend on that will add great value to the business, and what is just expensive business pork.
For example, investing in some new technology that could streamline processes while saving a lot of money could be a great investment; at the same time adding brand new, highly expensive desks and furniture for no other reason than to impress people, is not necessarily the best investment. Obviously some businesses by their nature will need to have high quality furnishings such as a bank.
The point is that we need to look carefully at our expenditures and find real value there. Find the right balance, and just like an individual investor, when the time comes when you may want to spend a little more, the money will be there to go in any direction you want.
