In my thirty years in the business world, there's one thing that I've learned that has helped by bypass a lot of stupid things that would have got be off of my purpose for being in business. What was it I learned? Don't listen to all the bull being slung around.
One of the stories I tell people is about my days when I was a financial advisor. From the point of view of my own personal investing, it was the worse days of my life. Why? All you heard was bull about companies and the thing you were going to miss if you didn't get in on it. Everything I did personally was counter to my philosophy of investing.
When you listen to executives, marketers and other managers or business owners, take it with a grain of salt; you really don't know if what they're saying is true or not. One of the reasons why, isn't because they are necessarily lying (although some will), but because they sometimes lie to themselves so much that when they talk they are speaking from something they absolutely believe; even though it's not true.
Don't believe everything you hear may sound too simple, but it is powerful. You may not believe how many people that talk a good talk end up shutting down their businesses or don't have a clue as to what where to go next.
So what do we do then? Be a student of whatever industry you're in. Keep current on what happening and look for new opportunities to enter into. Another way of putting it is to stay disciplined. Remember the purpose for being in business or what the purpose of the business you're working for is. That is the true check and balance that will keep you from going all over the map with the next "big" thing.
Practice these things and you should keep from getting sidetracked from all the people that like to talk and boast about how great they're doing. If it's not part of your business purpose, then just let all of that pass you by - you'll be glad you did
