
With a worker shortage projected of 8-10 million people by the year 2011, companies must do something to ensure that they have the type of work environment that workers don't want to leave.
One way to look at it is to think of where you would rather work: In a business that makes you feel good about showing up every day and shows you how valuable you are to them, or a business that doesn't show you any consideration or reveal that they are concerned about you?
It isn't the companies that just do some type of big thing one time a year that resonate with workers, but rather it is those that come up with numerous, changing little ways of showing what employees mean to them all year round.
Some to the things that can be done is to bring in various professionals to help people in their everyday lives. For example, in the area of finances you could bring in someone to help them understand stocks, mutual funds or bonds. They could show you how to plan for your retirement or offer insight into saving for college or purchasing a house.
You could offer all sorts of perks and reward programs that aren't really expensive to operate, but are great encouragers for employees that are great at getting to work on time, safety and not missing much of work.
The great think about creating a worker-friendly workplace is that it is not very costly to do, but just demands some time and creativity, plus knowing your employees and what they would like to see as motivators and rewards for being responsible on the job.
Don't underestimate the importance of this as part of your strategy going forward. The competition for employees is going to be fierce in the future than ever before. Those who win this battle will be those that create an environment at work where people thrive in and love to come to.
