The key thing to remember about change within your business is that it always relates to people. It doesn't matter if the change is in technology, vendors, competition, structure or focus. It is how it relates to your people that will be the most challenging aspect of the process.
First, we as managers must embrace the change wholly and completely. There can be no doubt within us when we bring it to our people. Make sure everything that you're concerned with is communicated with those that are making the decision so that you have it all straight within you. Your workers will know if you really believe in the changes or not. Settle that for yourself before any effort is made to communicate it to your employees.
Once that is settled within you, you can then develop a great attitude that can help your workers go through the change process. While there needs to be persistence when dealing with change, it still must be done with humor, patience, consideration and respect.
How we conduct ourselves in communicating the change process is as important as what the changes will be in themselves.
So what's the best way to get things started in change? Give people the opportunity for success right away. Let there be some victories from the start, and they will feel like there is a real chance at the changes will be able to be accomplished. There's nothing worse than introducing change that causes a series of defeats that make it that much harder and longer to implement.
Be sure to offer simple, easy changes at first that people are able to celebrate their victories over. This will create the foundation to enter into the rest of the process, where workers will believe they will be able to pull it off. Once they believe they can - they will!
