We talk a lot on managersrealm about what it means if you're working too much "in" your business instead of "on" your business. A recent study confirms that individual business owners are "wearing too many hats" to be able to work on growing their businesses.
Over half of the respondents realized that hiring an extra employee would free them to focus on growing their business, and almost 70% said that their budgets wouldn't allow it.
I've worked with a lot of people that have repeated this mantra over and over again through the years. In a lot of cases it's more that they won't give up control of any part of their business, rather than true budget shortfalls.
The most important thing to keep in mind to me is to decide whether you're happy with your business where it's currently at. If you're not, then you do need to face making changes in the business; which means you need to be willing to change yourself first. To grow a business always involves giving up some control. You must be willing to do that to grow.
What is one way you can make these changes and not hurt the business? The first thing you can do is to accept applications before you land the next deal to increase overall sales. That way you can have a list of candidates narrowed down and ready to interview.
Take a little time out of each day to work on adding new business to the company. When you land new business, then go ahead and work on adding a new employee right away. The time frame will be short and you'll be able to service the new business quickly and efficiently.
If you really want to grow your business, it doesn't have to be that hard to do. Most of the time the answer lies within you, rather than outward circumstances or availability of funds.
