With elections and politics on the hear horizon, Wal-Mart has finally decided to take a more proactive role in the process this time around.
Hopefully they have learned from the past that demagogues don't care about reality or facts, but in stirring up people that have no idea whether what is being presented to them as fact, is true or not.
At bloggingstocks.com Brian White mentions that "Wal-Mart sent out a letter to over 30,000 Iowa employees/residents in the past two weeks to respond to U.S. Presidential hopefuls that starting slinging mud at the global retailer." And also that "Wal-Mart is preparing to send out 'fact check' letters to its 27,000 Wal-Mart employees in South Carolina in preparation for the onslaught of potential Presidential candidates."
This is a good move. In the past I've felt that they have ignored this almost to the point of negligence. The lies being told by so many just to buy votes or get more union members have been outrageous. What's especially good about this is that they are moving out of the emotional realm and offering facts; rather than engage in emotional debates which demagogues are best at.
These are things to think about and be prepared for in our own businesses. There are many people out there waiting for the chance to attack something. Are you ready if it happens to be your company? Have an emergency plan in place and keep a close watch on the things being talked about around the world that may affect your company in the eyes of the public.
Pre-emption is a far better strategy than being "too" nice and letting outside forces define the issue. Do you agree?
