A recent article by Joe Torre, manager of the New York Yankees baseball team, talks about some of the important attributes of competing at the highest level.
His opening statement encapsulates an extraordinary insight into what all those who manage must pay attention to.
"Competing at the highest level is not about winning. It's about preparation, courage, understanding and nurturing your people, and heart. Winning is the result."
You may think that it's untrue because he says that it's not about winning. Yet he is right. It's not focusing on winning that makes someone win; it's focusing on performing and executing the fundamentals, day after day, that produces winning results.
The only thing that endlessly focusing on "winning" does is to get you off the focus of performance. It gets our attention off of our workers and your responsibility to them, and on things that we have no control over.
As Torre says, it's all about knowing your people and nurturing them to do the best job they can. It's up to us to provide the atmosphere where they can thrive.
