
When we are constantly barraged by the seemingly endless offerings that claim if we embrace them it will give us the edge over our competition, Joe Torre comments on the only differential, in the end, that really matters: people.
He talks about how computers and technology have made everything so impersonal. Still, to him, it still comes down to your people.
Even those that don't seem to have a large role need to be made to feel important in the role they play. All the supposedly small roles eventually contribute to the whole of the success of the team or company. The combination of them all are what make up the whole of what the company is. It is Torre's conclusion that this is what makes it all work.
Another thing he looks for in his employees is those that have heart. He distinguishes this from emotion. To him heart represents something deep down in the player that drives them beyond simply "mind and body."
Emotion can be a temporary lift, but it can never carry things through to the end. Too much for too long and you can burn out. But those with heart carry that day-to-day thing deep within them that helps them contribute consistently over long periods of time. They are the people that have the greatest value to any business.
Finally, he adds that he doesn't play favorites among any of his players. To him the 25th member of the team is just as important as the number one guy. He doesn't let his emotions get in the way of competing. This is one of the reasons he is one of the great managers in baseball history.
