One of the desires wanted most by employees is that they have a great challenge set before them. Most employees love to have a challenge, as long as they feel they have the ability and tools to be able to accomplish what is set before them.
This is one of those interesting two-edged sword situations. Set a challenge that can't possibly be completed by the employees you have, and it will be a disaster. On the other hand, give a challenge that has a real chance to succeed, and the whole work place can be energized.
It's usually not the struggle that employees resist, but a struggle that they feel can't be won. A way to deal with this is to help them to have a healthy prospective and idea of what exactly is required, and then help them to understand what the expectations as far as time and effort will be.
To tell them that everything will be done with a minimum of effort will be counterproductive. Rather it's best to say that it will be tough and hard but you have confidence in their ability and will provide them with every tool needed to successfully get the job done.
This will take away illusions and motivate them to have confidence that they can really do it. Just make sure when you say you'll provide them with every tool they need, that you do it. Employees will move mountains for you if you do.
