With the proliferation of corporate fraud cases and billions of dollars in penalties, along with jail time, it is not only important, but imperative that corporations and businesses conduct business ethically.
When it comes down to it, the actions of everyone within a workplace affect everyone else. If one person does something wrong, it can reverberate throughout the company and disrupt a lot of people's lives.
For us managers, we need to take to heart that we are examples in the workplace. Just like in anything else, people will follow what you do, far more than what you say. We're always being watched to see if we walk the walk and do what we say.
We need to live our lives on the job like we're being watched at all times. What we do when we're alone, should be the same thing we do if 50 people are watching us. Like former U.S. Congressman J.C. Watts says, “Character is doing the right thing when nobody’s looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that’s right is to get by, and the only thing that’s wrong is to get caught.”
Ethics will begin with us managers and leaders. This is where it starts and sets the whole culture of the company in this regard.
Take a look at yourself, and make sure that the temptation to cut corners or do things that you wouldn’t if others were watching are not part of your work lifestyle. We do set the pace, whether we realize it or not, for the rest of the workers we're responsible for.
