When your business has been run from a more hierarchical structure, and you begin to see that you want to change to empowering your employees, there are several things that you must do to make sure your workers embrace the change.
The first thing to realize is that the former structure itself has produced a certain mindset that isn't going to go away because you make an announcement that employees are now empowered.
As with any type of change, continuous communication and making sure your employees understand what you mean by "empowerment," is the key to successful transition. You need to make sure that your workers understand the limitations and boundaries that empowerment entails. They've been used to everything being done for them and will resist this in general, but even more, so if things aren't very concretely laid out for them concerning the new expectations.
Next, there must be a complete understanding of the priorities and goals by the workers. They won't enter the decision-making process if they are floundering without a vision. Confused people are always paralyzed into indecision when this is the case.
Lastly, their must be access to all necessary information for employees to be able to make quality, satisfying decisions. The old "closed" system and hoarding of information can no longer be tolerated if you want to be successful and tap into the resources your employees have to offer.
All of this is to say that it can't just happen because of an announcement that has been made. Take this steps and you'll be on the right path to truly releasing your employees to excel and love their work.
