After being in management for a period of time, the question inevitably arises from within us on whether it is time to hang it up, or whether we should keep on going.
One way that we can measure whether it is time to move on to something else besides management, is to ask ourselves a question: What happens after we help to solve a problem in the workplace?
How do you feel after that is done? Is there something in the pit of your stomach that is alive after it happens? Maybe you feel indifference or boredom over it. How about when new things or promotions are being introduced? Does that still excite you? When employees show signs of thriving in the work environment you've helped to create, does it still thrill you to see them emerge as great employees? Maybe you're feeling burnt out and don't even want to show up for work anymore.
It is answers to these questions that you need to honestly look for. Sometimes what can confuse us is that there are things outside of work that are affecting us and pulling us down. It may be that because of those things, it wouldn't matter what you were doing; it would still be the same no matter what.
So if you find yourself unsure of whether this is what you want to keep on doing, check your personal life and see if that is the reason. If that's not an issue, then you need to answer the types of questions listed above to see if it's simply time to change what it is you're doing. Only you can answer the question for you.
Have you found yourself in this situation lately? Or have you had to deal with this at other times in your management career? What did you do?
