Most of the time when we think of a team, we immediately think of some type of official organizational creation to do a specific job. While that's not necessarily untrue, it's not the whole picture.
The minute anybody within a business interacts with another worker about the business of the company, in essence there is a team created. It may be a team created that lasts only for 20 minutes as a specific problem or situation is dealt with or clarified. Or it may be spontaneous outbursts of creativity that demand further exploration.
What creates a team, whether spontaneously or through planning is always someone gets a vision of something, an idea to improve something, whether big or small. That vision or idea demands that people get together and do something about it.
One of the great result of the idea or vision that creates teamwork is that along with it comes group energy and a contagious enthusiasm. This enthusiasm and energy can be the thing that determines the success of the company over time as various, unique ideas are grown up in the company garden and fertilized by the various team members.
What part do we as managers play in this? Always look for these ideas and thoughts among your workers. Let the ones that see it be the ones to infect others with it so that something spontaneous is let loose in the company or department. All we have to do is do a little watering of the thing and let it go. The rest will take care of itself organically.
This is one way we can create a workplace where all sorts of things grow in it. This is really what it means to have a team. It's people gathered around a compelling idea or vision and getting together to make it a reality.
