In any successful business you need two types of people: the visionary and the one who makes sure the vision is executed. Neither does any good without out the other. Even if your a business of one, these two concepts must reside within you.
Besides the obvious role of inspiring a great vision, the outside role is to take personal responsibility for the external aspects of a company and is also the voice of the company in most cases to clients, and the essential one in communications and making sure all communications are understood explicitly. The role also serves to remind clients of the purpose and vision of the company and how that helps them to reach their goals.
Of course the internal specialist is always looking at practical reality and seeing to it that what is envisioned and promised is properly
executed and fulfilled. One thing we all need to consider is to understand which one is to be engaged in at the proper time.
One thing we all need to consider is to understand which one is to be engaged in at the proper time.
All managers have to have both of these characteristics to a certain degree. If you're responsible for a small department, you're not only responsible for execution, but you're the voice of the department to those who have shown what is wanted and needs to get done.
In this case you are the "external" voice of the department to those you report to. You keep in contact and report what is happening in the "internal" aspects of the project. When you're back with the workers attacking the problems that need to be solved, your focus must always be on execution primarily.
There are some managers and business owners that can confuse the two different skills and make a mess of things; especially when they should be operating in one area and instead apply their strengths into another.
In other words, those who are strong externally and need to focus on that portion of things, can make a mess of things if they enter into the execution of the plan and don't have the insight or ability to do the right thing.
Stick to that which you do well and let those that thrive in their own strengths do their job.
Have you experienced this venturing outside of your strengths or seen somebody else do it and botch up things good?
