When we hear a lot about motivating employees, there are all sorts of ideas thrown around concerning how to do it. All sorts of carrots to be offered to keep them moving.
The first and greatest motivator is the vision of the company in the first place. Assuming there is something that employees love giving themselves to, there is one other aspect of the company that must exist to enhance your employees' experience: that is trust.
When all is said and done, trust isn't that difficult to cultivate within a company if it is done right. Trust is nothing other than treating people like adults and letting go and letting them!
No amount of words or encouragement can take the place of getting out of the way and allowing them to show their stuff. To encourage and say the right words and then to destroy their expectations through contradictory practices is a sure way to destroy any trust that exists.
If you believe in your hiring system and have great training from the beginning, what is standing in the way of your employees other than you? Nothing! So get out of the way, let them do the job and give them all the credit. Results will explode and you will look like you actually know what you're doing. You'll be a real manager.
Saying you trust, isn't trust. Trust is releasing them to conquer the problems. Trust is trust. Trust is practical. It is something that is done - not said. Trust is an action. Trust is you doing little. Trust is management.
