Floyd Landis, the newest winner of the Tour de France, has followed some of his fellow American riders by doing it with having to overcome great obstacles.
Greg Lamond, years ago, did it while he had shotgun pellets inside of his body from a hunting accident. Of course Lance Armstrong won after recovering from cancer that nearly killed him.
In the case of Landis, he has a disintegrating hip problem that could end his involvement in the sport prematurely, yet, in spite of the ailment, went on to win this year.
With so much going against them they persevered to accomplish their goals in one of the worlds most grueling sports.
"When Floyd Landis decided to go on an attack after some 40 miles of a 120-mile-plus day race, you could hear his fellow cyclers cackling. "He's crazy. He's going to bonk. Not only won't he make it, he'll lose everything."
"Instead, Landis did an incredible ride last Thursday--what the French sports daily newspaper L'Equipe calls "Ride of the Century." Not Lemond, not Armstrong, not even the great Eddie Merckx has done such a ride."
These are people in their chosen profession that persevered when some of their weaknesses hit at the area that needed to be their strength. They accomplished their goals in spite of the hindrances and drawbacks.
Remember these inspirational men as you encounter things in your sphere of influence that seem to attack you at your weakest point and make you begin to doubt your ability to get through to victory and success. It's not talent or knowledge that will get you through, but something inside of you that refuses to give up until you reach what you're aiming for.
