A view of the coming health-care crisis

The mud is being slung everywhere. Mayor attacking the local chamber of commerce, tax hikes on businesses, utility rate hikes, pointing of fingers, special task forces and union concessions; that's the world that is already beginning to be part of the business and political landscape.

In Duluth, Minnesota, the battle lines have already been drawn and the crisis is upon them. The first thing happening is that the current mayor, Herb Bergson, is blaming the former mayor for the problem he's inherited, saying that during his tenure, the problem was smaller but he refused to do anything about it.

This has always been a giant ponzi scheme that politicians have played with hoping that the last victims wouldn't land on their watch; thus the finger pointing to past administrations.

The odd thing to consider in this as business owners and managers, is that it isn't even concerning the free market but rather government workers. The businesses are being asked to help bail out the politicians on the promises they have made to government employees that can't be funded. To fund their promises they would have to go into further debt.

When you come right down to it, the prices will be passed on to consumers, who in reality will be funding the health care of government retired workers.

This is one of the reasons Wal-Mart (WMT) has been under attack by unions and governments; to take the focus off of what has been the real issue, instead of blaming politicians for fiscal irresponsibility.

This is why you hear things like it is Wal-mart's fault that people aren't receiving health benefits, and as a result the state must pick up the costs. This transfers the focus from the core problem and issue and attempts to transfer it to a business.

Now for us business owners or managers, we need to understand that this is going to be a battle we will engage in during our lifetimes. It is best to develop a plan and strategy for how to deal with it when it comes to your neighborhood. It's already begun.
