Unless you're a sole proprietor, managing involves being envisioned by someone else and taking that vision and making it a reality.
To do this you must first buy into what it is being shown to you. That's the beginning of practical success. If you don't buy in to the overall plan, you will find yourself fighting against making it happen. This isn't always consciously, but many times is done without knowing it.
One way to help you with this is to think of dreams and visions as two different things. A dream is more the overall destination and the vision is the practical steps to get there. Managing is almost always the practical steps to get there part of the job.
Once the dream is understood it is the manager's job to find the solutions in how to get there. The dream is the guideposts, the vision is the road you travel on.
The dream is the cheerleader stage, the vision is the solutions side.
So how do you work with a dream then? By coming up with solutions, applying them and then adapting as you measure the results. You do this through feedback from customers and your employees, plus your own observation.
What's nice about working with vision is that it is there where you have the greatest impact. You can take an existing dream or goal and give everything you've got to making it practically happen. It's not really that hard to do when you understand the difference.
