Why do small businesses have less corruption than some large ones? There is really a simple answer that we need to embrace if we want to enhance our reputations.
What is it that keeps most small businesses on an honest path?
There are two things involved:
One is that there aren't the pressures from shareholders and investors to embrace certain behaviors. You don't have overly aggressive CEOs or executives that are encouraging cutting corners to reach short-term profits.
Second, and I think most important, small business is embedded in the local community. They know those that come in day after day to do business with them. There are checks and balances in place as a result that says that you behave in a certain way or we won't do business with you.
There is also the social restraints involved as you must live in the local community with those you may behave bad toward. It's not because someone owning a small business is more honest than big business, but held more accountable for their actions.
Big business needs to look at ways to have these types of checks and balances included in their way of doing business.
