Do you read about the endless chatter concerning companies are having struggles finding "talent?" It's almost becoming a contagion.
Why do I hate this so much? Because it's my true belief that this is the wrong thing to look for in employees.
The word talent implies something that one is born with, something special within someone. Those who consider themselves in this light, are really some of the most arrogant, hard-to-work with people. Many times they're not as good as they think. And even if they are, they're usually not worth the trouble of holding on to.
Now, there is one clarification to consider here: This doesn't mean that certain people aren't born with strong potential in certain areas. Rather it means that they'll never reach it without commitment of years to maturing and perfecting it.
Most times, you find that those with much less natural talent, will outperform those with it. Why? They commit to practice and excellence in their chosen fields.
So there really isn't such a thing a 'talent,' only potential. Those with the right desire, inspiration and motivation are far more valuable to a company than those that think they have some type of inherent gift that they don't develop to it's full potential. Give me those with heart and the right attitude over so-called 'talent' anytime.
