We've talked about some of the things that must be done to advance in your management position here before. Dave Lorenzo at the career intensity blog offers some of his input into this area as well.

He asks a good question: What have you done to demonstrate value this week?

This is the right question to ask when considering advancing in management for any company. The company must be shown that you have added value to the business or you aren't going to be considered for advancement. For the most part nobody will care that you're a nice person of if they don't like you that much, they care about "What have you done for me lately?"

Dave goes on to offer several tips on what you need to do:

1. The first step in Career Intensity is evaluating yourself.

2. The second step is creating value.

3. The third, which is the most often neglected, is demonstrating that value to others.

The point in all of this is that nobody knows what you are capable of unless you show them. That goes along with what we talk alot about here: Identifying things that need to be done and volunteering to do them. Then once the project is accomplished let it be known that it's completed and make sure it is to your managers satisfaction. This shows you care about what you've done and reminds them that it was you that did it.

Do this enough times and there is no way that you won't eventually get to where you want to go in the company.
