Last post we talked about sticking to our strengths and understanding what we are personally good at. Once we understand that about ourselves as managers, we need to take it another step and apply it to our employees.
There is an awful lot of time spent by some businesses to try to strengthen something that somebody will never become very good at.
The far better strategy used by great managers is to look for the strengths an employee has and focus on those and offer training, coaching and development in those areas. This is where you'll help an employee become a great asset to the company.
To train their weaknesses primarily, will only bring them to a level of mediocrity. Training and developing their strengths brings them to excellence.
If an employee doesn't have something, it is very probable that they never will. Don't waste their time and yours on that. Obviously there may be occasional exceptions to this rule that may need to be addressed. But your overall strategy is to find their strength and build it to its highest level.
In other words, don't try to fix someone, rather increase what they've got. This is by far the greatest and best return on your human capital you can get.
